M.I.A. vs. M.T.V.

It's really no shock, but once again the cultural vacuum that is MTV has decided to censor yet another artist. This time, it's the video for M.I.A.'s 'Paper Planes', a politically charged anthem that's in my opinion, one of the best songs of 2007. A YouTube leak revealed that not only did the Viacom network censor some of the lyrical content, but they also did some weird shit to her vocals to make them sound horrible. The Brit/Sri Lankan vocalist speaks out quite angrily here on her blog.

Two weeks ago M.I.A. was the network's artist of the week. You know, when they do that thing where her music is running through 'Shot at Love' and 'The Hills' promos? I even specifically remember her talking about the song, saying how the gunshots and cashregister sounds were commentary about how it's cheaper to buy a gun than a mobile phone, so in her home of Sri Lanka kids just shoot each other for cells.

But yet, knowing this, they still try to fuck with a positive message while it's perfectly fine for other rappers to have far more violent and misogynistic videos and lyrics.

Check out the good, un-censored version here:

Lauren Conrad, A&R GENIUS

I'm pretty embarrassed to admit it, but despite it being 'scripted reality', I'm obsessed with The Hills.

At the Season 3 'finale' it was revealed the season wasn't over and there were upcoming episodes of LC and Whitney's voyage to Paris. In the previews Lauren is seen canoodling with a French gentleman, who as Page Six reports is a member of the oh-so-originally-titled band Rock & Roll:
Before Lauren Conrad and her Teen Vogue counterpart, Whitney Port, went to Paris to "work" at the Crillon Ball, producers were "frantically calling publicists to see if anyone knew any guys to set the girls up with in Paris. If they had a love affair there, then it would look better," a source said.

One publicist came through, and the girls were set up with the band Rock & Roll, "the King Cobras of New Wave Rock," who are set to star in the new Roberto Cavalli campaign this spring. And, at least for Conrad - who had been "flirting" with Brody Jenner, although spies say the two were never more than friends - the ruse worked.

"Lauren was filmed riding off with the guitar player, Matthias, on the back of his bike," our source said. "They hooked up." The band's biggest hit is "Loser, Boozer, Jacuzzi-User."

Well, I don't know about 'King Cobras of New Wave Rock', 'Wannabe Strokes' is more like it. LC, you should know better, knockoffs are such a no-no and New Wave is so, like, 2005. Leave it to trust fund babies from the Lower East Side and the Brits, please. You were in France, at the very least you could have hooked up with someone off Ed Banger Records. You can check out Rock & Roll's MySpace here and LC's frog prince (pictured above) has his own page here.

Merch of the Week

Because I don't think it's written/blogged about enough (or ever, even), I've decided to start a weekly series displaying some of the best in artist merch. This deluxe R. Kelly 'Trapped in the Closet' set will set a pretty high standard.

There's even more available at Merch Now.

Thanks to Tom at Washed Up Emo.

You know you've made it when...

Streetwear has finally gotten its own parody site: Satchel of Gravel.

The contributors make some interesting observations, but for people that supposedly hate the scene so much, they seem to spend an inordinate amount of their time learning about it.

Thanks for the tip Rach.

The Streetwear Parade?

Apparently the latest trend in streetwear is taking inspiration from commercial 'emo' pop. Above, I present you with a recent release from the normally cutting-edge LRG and below, a promo shot from My Chemical Romance's Black Parade campaign:What's next? The Hundreds releasing AFI-inspired skin-tight netted shirts?!

Let it Snow

With about a foot of snow dumped on this area of New England and another storm predicted for Saturday, you better be bundled up. I always hated the snow and having to dress up like a marshmallow whenever the temps hit below 40. However, I love this jacket from Rojas, it's got that militaristic edge while creating the illusion of feminine curves and keeping you warm.

I knew it.

This isn't fashion-related at all. But I seriously cannot wait for this to come out. All I have to say is: told you so.

Only in NYC...

While I was in NYC the other day I did a little xmas window shopping and came upon Trixie + Peanut, a boutique for only the most pampered of pooches.

I was originally attracted by their window display which featured some adorable faux fur-trimmed hooded jackets and what appears to be the latest trend in doggie accesorizing: wigs.

I'm pretty sure a greasy 'fro is what's been on my dogs' xmas list this year.

Designer rabbits, no...not that kind of Rabbit

Parisian artist André has just created this new designer Nabaztag.

The little bunny interacts with your computer via Wi-Fi and gives you up-to-date weather reports, stock quotes, news, the time, receives SMS text messages, does Tai-Chi, answers your questions, interacts with other Nabaztags and basically does anything else you program it to do.

It kinda reminds me of a post-millennium version of those freakish Furby things; cute for the first five minutes and then probably annoying as hell.
